The 1960s saw the rise of mass tourism, and with it, the development of camping and boating.
In Great Britain, this rise has spurred the concept of Caraboat, strange descendants resulting from unnatural relations between an automobile (a Mini Van in this case), a caravan and a fishing boat (a mast option being possible to dispose of of a sailboat)!
The result is surprising to say the least!
On the road, the MINI looks like a bulbous campervan, whose top nose, looking like a top sleeping room, is at last... the bow of the boat turned up on its roof! Given the damping of a Mini, driving was certainly a bit sporty, and one wonders about the junction between car and caravan, especially in terms of sealing ...
At the stop, on a river- or seaside, three turns of crank and the caravan stands out to become a sort of shelter, provided with a kitchenette and a dining room.
But the strongest remains to come, since 4 hooks unscrewed later, the boat left the roof of the car to reach the water.
In this epic video from Pathé, the concept of the Mini Caraboat is explained in pictures, and while mother and daughter prepare the tea, the master of the house and his son-in-law will fish ...
Meanwhile, used as a camper, the Caraboat could accommodate 4 people at night, with its 4 double beds ...
Astonishing, no?
In the meantime, there was no shame at the time to assume the fact that his boat was ... a caravan ;-) !!
