Australia’s leading luxury motor yacht builder, Riviera, has chosen Volvo Penta’s state-of-the-art Inboard Performance System (IPS) as the propulsion drive for its new 4800 Sport Yacht. Volvo Penta and Riviera have maintained a strong partnership for years, with more than 1000 IPS drives engineered into the marque’s highly awarded range of yachts.

“In 2008, Riviera eagerly embraced the industry-leading technology of Volvo Penta’s IPS system, recognizing that it offers superb performance, fuel efficiency and comfort for the luxury motor yacht enthusiast,” says Andrew Nicholson, head of Volvo Penta Oceania. “We are delighted to celebrate the global launch of our new engine and drive system with such an internationally renowned yacht builder. Our relationship with Riviera continues to grow each year and we are excited to be a part of the new 4800 Sport Yacht, which showcases our latest IPS technical innovations.”

Riviera’s new Sport Yacht can be equipped with either the Volvo Penta D8-IPS700 (twin D8 engines and IPS15 pod drives at 550hp) or the D8-IPS800 (600hp). Volvo Penta IPS has forward-facing counter-rotating propellers and pulls the yacht through the water as opposed to pushing it by conventional drive systems.

Volvo Penta key account manager Gavin Rooney says: “Introduction of the Volvo Penta D8-IPS700 and 800 engines accomodates a key segment in our marine leisure line-up. This exceptional package provides state-of-the-art fuel efficiency and classic Volvo Penta high torque at low RPMs for power boats in the 45-55 foot range.”

A Cutting edge technology

Volvo Penta is widely regarded as a world-leader in complete, user-friendly power systems for the marine industry. Its new 8-liter engine expands the offer of its diesel products for applications that require low weight with high power.

“Fuel efficiency and low emissions – hallmarks of Volvo Penta’s engines – have been further improved with the D8 engine as a result of Volvo’s continued research and technical development programs,” says Rooney.

In addition to the installation of IPS, Riviera’s 4800 Sport Yacht is equipped with Volvo Penta’s ground-breaking Glass Cockpit and Electronic Vessel Control (EVC). These features offer full control of the boat from the helm to propeller.
