The Italian shipyard Cantieri di Pisa is continuing work on its new, fully bespoke 40-metre superyacht. This project, which marks a significant milestone for the builder since its change of management, is now showing substantial progress. The hull is complete, whilst the superstructure is progressing rapidly, with the first level nearly 90% complete. Assembly of the stern section is imminent, and interior fitting-out work has already begun, confirming that the project has entered a more advanced phase.
Founded in 1945 in Tuscany, Cantieri di Pisa has established itself over the decades as one of the iconic shipyards of Italian shipbuilding, particularly in the motor yacht sector. The brand made its mark from the 1960s onwards with the Akhir series, which left a lasting impression on pleasure yacht design with its elegant and distinctive lines. Following a period of decline, the shipyard has embarked on a revival in recent years, with the ambition of reconnecting with its heritage whilst incorporating contemporary standards in design and production.
The yacht currently under construction exemplifies this desire to combine tradition and modernity. With a displacement of approximately 450 GT, it stands out for its generous interior spaces, which are larger than the average for vessels of comparable size. The project’s architecture is based on a reinterpretation of the brand’s historic aesthetic codes, notably through exterior lines inspired by iconic models, whilst incorporating modern technical solutions and materials.
On the industrial front, the various construction phases are progressing in a coordinated manner. Following the completion of the hull, the teams are now working on the superstructure and ancillary elements, such as the flybridge, which is currently under construction. The crew quarters are currently being fitted out, with preparations underway for the installation of insulation systems. Meanwhile, the technical equipment for the hull is in the final stages of completion, with some mounting brackets already installed on board.
The choice of materials reflects a quest for balance between aesthetics, durability and flexibility. The deck will be made of green teak, in the form of modular planks allowing for precise adaptation to the vessel’s dimensions. Elements such as the hardtop and certain areas of the upper deck will be constructed from composite materials, in order to reduce weight whilst maintaining strength suitable for marine conditions.
The yacht’s visual identity draws inspiration from the brand’s historic models, notably the Akhir 118 Nena. The livery will feature a metallic silver finish, combined with dark grey details, echoing Cantieri di Pisa’s traditional design codes whilst modernising them. This approach aims to maintain stylistic continuity whilst meeting current market expectations.
The interior layout has been designed to accommodate up to twelve guests across six cabins. The owner’s suite, located at the forward end of the main deck, features a side terrace and a sliding glass door incorporating privacy technology. The lower deck houses a VIP cabin and four guest cabins. Crew quarters comprise four cabins, whilst the captain and first mate have separate quarters on the upper deck.
The yacht has been designed for extended stays at sea, with a layout that facilitates life on board. Facilities include a fully equipped galley, several refrigerated food storage areas, and a large-capacity laundry room. The yacht is further complemented by storage spaces distributed across the various decks, meeting the demands of intensive use, particularly during long-term cruises.
The project also incorporates leisure facilities, including a 6.60-metre tender and various water sports equipment. These facilities, combined with on-board entertainment systems, meet current industry standards in the superyacht market, where the on-board experience is a key priority.
Technically, the yacht will be powered by two MAN V12 engines, each producing 1,550 horsepower. This configuration enables a maximum speed of approximately 15 knots, with a cruising speed of 13 knots and an estimated range of 2,000 nautical miles. The vessel will be certified as ‘Charter class’ by Bureau Veritas, making it suitable for commercial operation as well as private use.
The owner, based in Europe and experienced in the yachting sector, wanted a vessel capable of serving mixed purposes, combining personal use with charter potential. This dual focus has influenced certain design choices, particularly regarding the layout of spaces and the optimisation of crew operations.
This project represents a significant milestone for Cantieri di Pisa, which is seeking to strengthen its position in the bespoke yacht market. In a sector characterised by fierce competition and growing demands for quality and customisation, the ability to successfully complete this type of build represents a strategic challenge for the shipyard.
Work continuing over the coming months will see the project enter the final stages of assembly and fitting-out, ahead of sea trials.
