If this world tour is certainly a human adventure, it is also an extraordinary technical adventure, especially with regard to the equipment of the boat.
We will come back soon on the small adaptations made on the Lagoon 400 for this out of the ordinary world tour, the question of the set of sails was concretely on the table last week, and that included the spinnaker test.
In terms of sails, Chemins d'Océans has been trusting for 15 years to the Tarot sailmaker, based in Les Sables d'Olonne, a company that makes all the sails of the concession.
A choice for Jean-Pierre Fréry, CEO of Chemins d'Océans, that materialized itself over time, by listening to the different opinions and considering the quality of the achievements of this medium size sail, and also by the fact that Tarot, this year, works especially on the sails of 7 specific boats, engaged in particular in the Golden Globe or La longue route (The Long Road).
For its nonstop world tour through the 3 capes, the Lagoon 400 will be equipped with 5 sails: a mainsail, a zero code, a Genoa jib, a solent (making half the surface of the Genoa), and a spinnaker.
This spinnaker of little winds, tested last week, is quite classic, and is presented as a triradial spinnaker, offering a lot of curvature. Tested by 10 knots of wind, it allowed the Lagoon 400 to take a speed of 5 knots.
Jean-Pierre Fréry commented on this choice for ActuNautique: "25,000 miles around the world through the three capes, it is sometimes light wind - hence the interest of a maximum spinnaker - but it will be mostly strong wind; in the Great South, Cavok will replace his Genoa with a solent, twice as small, note the lowered tack and the raised clew".
The preparation program therefore follows its course in La Grande Motte, respecting the initial timing according to Jean-Pierre Fréry, this Wednesday being also dedicated to Immarsat communication tests.
On July 22, the catamaran should take off towards La Rochelle, where he will be one of the stars of the Grand Pavois, a guest of the Quartier Aventure of the Salon.
The start of the world tour is scheduled for the week following the closure of the La Rochelle Salon.
