Following the passage of cyclone Garance, La Réunion is facing a dramatic situation. After Mayotte, recently hit by cyclone Chido, it is another island in the French Indian Ocean archipelago that is suffering the consequences of a climatic phenomenon of rare intensity. The damage is considerable and the human toll, still provisional, is already heavy.

In these difficult times, ‘our thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this disaster. We also salute the work of the rescue teams and local authorities, who have been working tirelessly to restore infrastructure and help the affected populations,’ said ANEL, the National Association of Coastal Elected Representatives.

The tragedy that has struck Réunion affects us all the more because the island recently hosted a delegation from the National Association of Coastal Elected Representatives (ANEL), led by its president Yannick Moreau, who came to discuss the specific challenges facing the people of Réunion.

In light of this situation, A.N.E.L. and its members stand ready to support local authorities and respond to the needs expressed. We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Reunion Island and its inhabitants, and our commitment to supporting the reconstruction and assistance efforts currently underway.

Réunion is going through a terrible ordeal and our thoughts are with the inhabitants, elected representatives and rescue teams working tirelessly to remedy the consequences of this new disaster. More than ever, solidarity between coastal communities will have to be strongly expressed in order to
support the island and its inhabitants. I say to our friends in Réunion: you are not alone, and know that you can count on the solidarity of all the French coastlines, united with you across the continents by a solid, powerful and lasting maritime link that we will honour if you need us.

Yannick MOREAU, President of A.N.E.L.
