Hybrid motor boats - Molabo will present a 48 V series hybrid system at Metstrade 2025

German manufacturer Molabo GmbH is unveiling an innovation at Metstrade 2025 in Amsterdam that could mark a turning point in the field of marine electric propulsion: a 48-volt series hybrid system combining its Aries motor with the AGT range of generators developed by Fischer Panda. This solution aims to offer safe, flexible and efficient propulsion for long-range vessels, while retaining the simplicity of low-voltage systems.

Originally designed for the IMOCA Team Malizia racing yacht, the new ARIES Hybrid system combines two proven technologies in a single energy management environment. It allows for all-electric operation during coastal sailing or low-load conditions, while using on-board electricity generation for long crossings or increased energy needs. This series architecture is based on a simple principle: the generator directly powers the electric motor and recharges the batteries without the need for mechanical transmission.

The entire system operates on 48 volts DC, a choice that is central to Molabo's philosophy. Unlike high-voltage systems, this configuration requires no specific certification or special safety equipment. It ensures increased safety for both users and technicians and greatly facilitates integration into existing shipyards. Marine electricians can work without specialised tools, and installation does not slow down production rates.

The innovation also lies in the integration of Fischer Panda's AGT generators, renowned for their compactness and energy efficiency. Available in 6 to 22 kW versions, these generators are compatible with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel, a renewable biofuel often referred to as ‘green diesel’. This compatibility paves the way for a measurable reduction in carbon footprint in hybrid applications and extends the range of boats while maintaining optimal emissions management.

According to Tommi Salonen, Molabo's global marine sales manager, this innovation is aimed at medium and large vessels, including offshore cruisers, catamarans and service vessels. The system, he explains, ‘extends range and enhances performance without complicating maintenance or adding technical constraints’. At the same time, Sebastian Krallemann, Sales Manager at Fischer Panda, emphasises that the combination of these technologies ‘significantly improves the range and reliability of electric propulsion, offering sailors greater freedom’.

Beyond its energy efficiency, the system stands out for its ease of operation. The ARIES motor retains the modular and quiet design of Molabo's 48 V platform, while generator maintenance benefits from the Fischer Panda global support network. This complementarity between electrical expertise and energy production know-how enhances the attractiveness of the system for OEMs and shipyards wishing to deploy low-emission hybrid solutions without switching to high voltage.

Molabo will also take advantage of the show to present the new ARIES 50 kW jet engine, developed in partnership with Kaiser Bootsmanufaktur. This propulsion system illustrates the ability of 48-volt technology to adapt to compact applications requiring rapid thrust and maximum efficiency, confirming the versatility of the platform.

Founded in 2016 in Ottobrunn, near Munich, Molabo has established itself as a leading player in low-voltage electric propulsion. With a focus on safety, sustainability and performance, the company is developing a technological approach that aims to democratise electric marine mobility. With this new hybrid system, it is taking a step towards cleaner, more accessible and rational propulsion, adapted to the demands of contemporary navigation.
