Honda Marine renews its 4-cylinder and V6 outboard motors

Honda, the world's leading engine manufacturer, announces the renewal of its 4-cylinder outboard motors from 115 to 150 hp, and its V6 motors from 200 to 250 hp, as part of a strategy to upgrade its technical and aesthetic range.

For the 2025 boating season, Honda Marine is unveiling a major evolution in its range of high-powered outboard engines. The 4-cylinder BF115, BF135 and BF150 series, as well as the V6 BF200, BF225 and BF250 series, have undergone significant improvements designed to enhance their performance, durability and ease of use. These new models will make their first appearance at major European boat shows, including Hiswa te Water, the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Genoa Boat Show and the Southampton International Boat Show.

Honda Marine: a range harmonised around the design of the BF350 V8

Since the launch of its V8 BF350, Honda Marine has clearly marked its ambition in the high-end market. The new 4-cylinder and V6 engines now feature the same aesthetic codes as this flagship model. Their cowlings have a more assertive design, inspired by automotive styling, with taut lines and a reinforced finish. Three colours are available: Aquamarine Silver, Grand Prix White and the new Sporty White, initially introduced on the BF350 and now available across the entire range.

This aesthetic alignment reflects a desire to standardise Honda Marine's visual identity. But beyond style, the brand has worked on the rigidity of parts exposed to marine conditions to ensure increased resistance to stress and corrosion.

Honda Marine: engines designed for versatility

The 4-cylinder series covers a power range from 115 to 150 horsepower, suitable for medium-sized boats, whether family units, RIBs or small pleasure craft. The V6 series, ranging from 200 to 250 horsepower, is aimed at larger boats designed for fast cruising, water sports or professional applications. These engines, mounted as single or multi-engine units, meet the needs of a diverse customer base.

Francesco Pichelli, Sales Director at Honda Marine Europe, explains on Actunautique Yachting art: "The new improved 4-cylinder and V6 outboard engines illustrate our ongoing commitment to the marine sector, continuing the positive momentum created by the launch of the V8 BF350. We believe that these redesigned models, incorporating significant design innovations and technical improvements, fully meet customer expectations for high-end performance and a first-class boating experience, objectives that are at the heart of Honda Marine's mission. With a strengthened outboard range, Honda Marine Europe can consolidate and develop its partnerships with shipyards and other trusted players, while responding to the changing expectations and priorities of our customers with advanced technology and comprehensive turnkey solutions, combining engines and pre-installed boat configurations."

Exclusive Honda technologies

The new outboards incorporate all the technologies developed by Honda Marine over several decades. The BLAST (Boosted Low Speed Torque) system optimises torque at low revs by advancing the ignition, significantly improving acceleration when starting and getting out of the water for towing activities. The VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Electronic Control) system ensures a smooth transition between different valve operating modes, maintaining constant torque and reduced fuel consumption. The PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) system, already proven in the automotive industry, guarantees immediate start-up, rapid acceleration response and optimised fuel efficiency.

Added to this is the ECOmo mode, which continuously adjusts the air-fuel mixture to reduce fuel consumption when cruising. The latest development further extends the range of use of this mode, helping to lower operating costs.

Guillaume Valladon, Marketing and Communications Manager at Honda Marine France, explains: "Since the arrival of the BF350, we have been moving towards a new dynamic, with more innovation, more connectivity and more technology. For Honda Marine, quality and customer satisfaction are paramount, which is why we are launching the new range, still guaranteed for up to 10 years, with an elegant design and cutting-edge technology. These new features mark the beginning of a new chapter for us and a new, more comfortable, connected and autonomous customer experience. "

Modernised controls and ergonomics

The ergonomics of the cockpit have been redesigned to simplify manoeuvring and offer a more intuitive experience. Models equipped with Honda iST (Intelligent Shift & Throttle) control benefit from a drive-by-wire system that eliminates mechanical cables. Installation is simplified thanks to a plug-and-play principle, with no programming required for a single-engine configuration. The control box features a modern design, with an improved grip lever and a five-button multifunction side panel.

The drive-by-wire models also incorporate the features of the BF350 V8: trim assist, automatic tilt and cruise control, for increased comfort when sailing. The engines also remain compatible with the latest generation of displays, including 7-inch high-definition displays, offering better visibility than the older HD-4 and HD-5 models.

Internal improvements and enhanced reliability

Honda has introduced several internal optimisations to increase reliability and service life. The combustion chamber has been redesigned to improve efficiency, while the starter motor mount and seal have been reinforced to ensure consistent starting in all conditions. Fasteners, seals and drainage systems have been redesigned to limit corrosion under the bonnet.

Maintenance has also been simplified. The oil filter has been repositioned to limit leaks during oil changes, a new oil bypass system prevents dripping, and a redesigned vapour separator makes disassembly easier. Valve adjustment intervals have been extended and the use of iridium spark plugs extends their service life.

Easier installation

Engine manufacturers and shipyards will also benefit from the revised design. A new position for the mounting hole on the transom simplifies installation and reduces adjustment time. These developments make it easier to replace older engines with these new units, reducing repowering costs and lead times.

Honda Marine: a strong strategy in Europe

The launch of these models is part of Honda Marine's strategy to strengthen its presence in the European market. The company is promoting a desire for increased collaboration with partner shipyards to offer turnkey solutions combining boats and engines. This approach aims to provide boaters and professionals with an integrated experience, from design to use.

Francesco Pichelli emphasises that this move upmarket ‘meets customer expectations for premium performance and boating experience’. Following the success of the BF350 V8, the arrival of the new 4-cylinder and V6 engines represents a further step in the brand's development.

Scheduled for release in early 2026

The new generation BF115, BF135, BF150, BF200, BF225 and BF250 engines will be available through the European Honda Marine network from early 2026. They are NMEA 2000® certified, ensuring compatibility with modern navigation electronics.

A consistent move upmarket

With these developments, Honda Marine is confirming its focus on engines that combine robustness, advanced technology and ease of use. The new 4-cylinder and V6 engines incorporate the innovations introduced on the BF350 V8, consolidating the offering across the entire range.

These engines are designed for a wide range of users: recreational boaters looking for comfort and reliability, marine professionals who need robustness and endurance, and water sports enthusiasts in search of performance. They reflect Honda's commitment to keeping pace with developments in the European market, while remaining true to its values of innovation and sustainability.
