It was in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, during the Loro Piana Giraglia 2025, that Wally chose to unveil its latest creation, the Wallyrocket71. The result of a collaboration between Botin Partners, King Marine shipyard and owner Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, this monohull was designed with a clear goal in mind: to outperform the Maxi 72s in time-compensated races.
Featuring a high-performance keel bulb, twin rudders and 2.7 tonnes of water ballast that can be displaced in six seconds, the wallyrocket71 boasts a weight saving of nearly two tonnes compared to the Maxi 72. This lightness is complemented by a specially adapted rig and optimised draught, offering responsive handling, particularly in light or unstable winds.
Vasco Vascotto, tactician aboard Django, the first wallyrocket71 in competition, highlights the boat's potential: ‘Light and lively, it is already performing as expected, with remarkable results in its first trials in Valencia.’ Strategist Guillermo Parada confirms that sailing is demanding but in line with the objectives: ‘We have created a sailboat that is three tonnes lighter than its rivals, with equivalent power.’
This model is not content with isolated technical excellence. It has been designed to perform in all sailing conditions, far from being specialised in upwind or downwind sailing. Wally has already applied this cross-cutting positioning to other models, such as the Wallyrocket51, which has competed successfully in the ORC championships.
Since the beginning of the year, the Wally fleet has been making a name for itself across the maxi racing calendar. In the Caribbean Sea, during the St Barths Bucket and the RORC Nelson's Cup, the Galateia, V and Bullitt boats battled for the podium in lively conditions, reaching speeds of over 20 knots. On the European circuit, the season confirmed the competitiveness of the Wallys, with Tilakkhana II and Rose leading the way in Palmavela.
The Tre Golfi Sailing Week in Sorrento saw seven Wallys line up, with three finishing in the top 10. Meanwhile, Little Thila, wallynano37, won the Spirit of Tradition category, demonstrating the versatility of the brand.
Alberto Galassi, CEO of the Ferretti Group, paid tribute to the collective commitment: ‘The wallyrocket71 is not just another sailing yacht, it is a milestone in our journey. It embodies our constant desire to broaden the horizons of design and performance in racing.’
This season, 15 Wally yachts are competing in major international events. After the Giraglia, the fleet will head to Porto Cervo for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, then to Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. The year will end with the Rolex Middle Sea Race, with hundreds of miles covered and a list of achievements that continues to grow.
Analysis - With the wallyrocket71, Wally has designed a boat built to deliver lasting performance without compromising on manoeuvrability or IRC efficiency. It is a strategy focused on competitive endurance rather than spectacular feats, in line with the brand's commitments on the world's greatest offshore sailing stages.
